Nivica Canyon is one of Albania’s most spectacular and least-visited natural attractions. Located within the Tepelenë municipality, this dramatic gorge features towering rock walls, crystal-clear swimming pools, and hiking trails through untouched wilderness. Unlike the better-known Osumi Canyon, Nivica sees very few tourists — making it perfect for travelers who want an authentic off-the-beaten-path experience.
The canyon offers several activities depending on the season and your fitness level. Swimming in the natural pools is the highlight during summer — the water is clear and refreshingly cold. Hiking along the canyon rim provides breathtaking views of the gorge below. For the more adventurous, scrambling through parts of the canyon floor is possible with proper footwear.
Nivica Canyon is approximately 30 km from Tepelenë, about a 40-minute drive on mountain roads. A local guide is recommended for your first visit as the trails are not well-marked. Avni at Panoramic View House can arrange a guided trip or provide detailed directions. Bring sturdy shoes, water, snacks, and a swimsuit.
May through October offers the best conditions. Summer (June-August) is ideal for swimming. Spring and autumn provide cooler hiking temperatures and dramatic water levels.
