Lekli Castle is a medieval fortress situated near the village of Lekli, along the road between Tepelenë and Gjirokastra. Built on a rocky promontory above the Vjosa River, this castle controlled one of the most important routes through southern Albania for centuries.

History

The castle dates back to the medieval period and was later reinforced during the Ottoman era. Its strategic position overlooking both the river and the road made it a key defensive point. Today, the ruins still convey the strength of the original fortification, with walls and towers visible among the vegetation.

Visiting

Lekli Castle is accessible by a short detour from the SH4 highway between Tepelenë and Gjirokastra. The site is unfenced and free to explore. Combine it with a day trip to Gjirokastra — the castle is roughly halfway between the two towns. Ask Avni at Panoramic View House for directions.
